Big Cottonwood Canyon is named after the mammoth sized Cottonwood trees that grew near the creek bottoms before the heavy logging took its toll on the canyon's trees. In fact, by 1910 most of the forest had disappeared. The newly organized Forest Service then stepped in and planted over 250,000 seedlings throughout the canyon, adding to the beauty and rich biodiversity found in the canyon today.
The Old Mill
Along the course you will run pass the historic Old Mill, which was built as a paper mill by Deseret News in 1883. In 1892, a fire badly burned the structure and the mill was left abandoned until 1927 when it was renovated and used as a dance hall until the 1940's. Since then the Old Mill has been used for various reasons, most prominently as a haunted house.
